So I FINALLY watched The Secret last night. I told myself I would never watch it. I’m a skeptic of anyone who offers a better life. What could possibly be so profound that it could break down my steal barriers that prevent me from being profounded…uhh…yeah I know that’s not a word, but you know what I mean!
I did know before watching the DVD that The Secret was basically about The Law of Attraction. I had learned a little about the Law of Attraction from some other random video on the internet (a posting in someone’s myspace bulletin), that video was actually a lot more convincing than The Secret. This “internet video” was interviewing this scientist (Japanese?) who has been doing experiments on The Law of Attraction. The guy would hook up these rigs to peoples’ brains and influence them to think certain thoughts (good thoughts, bad thoughts…). These, uh…”rigs” would then project the “brain waves” into water…I think it was water….anyways, these brain waves would produce images in the water. Not just some shape, but pretty amazing shapes, well at least the good thoughts did. The good thoughts would produce these perfectly symmetrical snowflake shapes. It was pretty fuckin’ cool. The bad thoughts would produce these really…ugly shapes that didn’t really look like anything at all, like maybe just spilt slime or something. It was all really neat and definitely proved that thoughts can manipulate the environment (read Self-Awareness). How much time will it take to utilize this power to work for our advantage?
Anyways, back to The Secret. For the most part, my preconceived notions about the video were proved to be correct. It was like watching a video at some “You CAN Do it!” conference. You know, like on Magnolia or Donnie Darko. I didn’t like the production of the video, it was really geared towards people who are normally easily influenced by a bunch of positive mumbo-jumbo and talking heads. I didn’t like the video, BUT I did like the message. The only problem I had with the message was, how could someone (a “The Secret” supporter) look in the eyes of a starving child in a war-torn country and say, “You brought this on yourself by thinking bad thoughts!”
Even though most of the video drove me nuts, all those scenes with people from olden’ times running around with scrolls and crap, I was definitely inspired by it’s philosophy, that you can change your life just by thinking about what you want. The Secret (The Law of Attraction) tells us that we can influence change. Ya’ know, even if it doesn’t work and was never meant to, like if it were some fucked up joke, it really wouldn’t hurt to give it a try, right?
Thinking about The Law of Attraction also got me thinking about Pandeism. If there was some science behind The Law of Attraction, wouldn’t it be able to explain why we’re able to manipulate our environment? If someone were so masterful at The Law of Attraction, wouldn’t they be able to not only influence change within their live, but also do really amazing things like levitate and move shit with their mind? I mean, why not? Maybe Jesus was a fan of The Secret too!
I just wish everyone would stop calling it The Secret. That’s such baloney. It’s like they wanted it to have some sort of DaVinci Code effect or something.
